This research study presents a comprehensive, critical, and analytical review of the customs and rituals related to marriage and mourning (death) practiced in the Multan Division, examined in the light of Islamic teachings. The Multan Division is an ancient cultural and religious region of the Indian subcontinent, where social traditions, cultural values, and religious concepts have interacted for centuries to shape communal life. Under the influence of these factors, numerous rituals associated with marriage and mourning have become established over time and have been granted religious significance, although they are largely rooted in cultural traditions and social pressures.
Islamic teachings describe marriage as a simple, dignified social contract based on moral values, intended to promote peace of mind, family stability, and social balance. In contrast, certain marriage practices in the Multan Division reflect extravagance, ostentation, unnecessary financial burdens, and social competition, which are inconsistent with the Islamic principles of moderation and simplicity. Similarly, Islam emphasizes patience, prayer, condolence, and the conveyance of reward to the deceased at the time of death. However, in practice, some fixed rituals, compulsory gatherings, and the specification of time and expenses do not appear to align with the Islamic concept of death and the Prophetic tradition.
This study, drawing upon the Holy Qur’an, the Prophetic Sunnah, classical jurisprudential sources, and contemporary research literature, examines how certain social customs have been assigned religious status, causing the true spirit of Islamic teachings to recede into the background. The research concludes that there is considerable scope for reform in marriage and mourning practices. By promoting social awareness grounded in Islamic principles, these occasions can be freed from extravagance, formality, and unnecessary ritualism, thereby contributing to the development of a balanced, simple social system rooted in Islamic values.
